Minor in media and journalism

Media and Journalism minor

NOTE: The following minor curriculum information is for those applying to the program beginning Fall 2017. Curriculum requirements for students who entered the minor program prior to Fall 2017 are available by speaking with a Hussman academic adviser or by consulting the appropriate Office of the University Registrar Undergraduate Catalog.

Students majoring outside the school may earn a minor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Program acceptance is limited to 35 juniors and seniors collectively to prevent registration pressure on required courses for majors. Priority will be given to students who have previously taken two or more MEJO courses within their desired sub-plan. Interested students who have a minimum 3.4 GPA must apply between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15 of their sophomore or junior year. Accepted students will be notified by the end of February.

Applicants designate one of two minor sub-plans offered within the school: Advertising / Public Relations (APR) and Journalism (JRN). Prerequisites must be met for selected minor courses.

MEJO minors will take the school’s Usage & Grammar Test during "MEJO 153: Writing and Reporting" but are not required to pass with a score of 70 or better as a graduation requirement.

In addition to the program requirements listed on the respective worksheets, students must:

  • take at least nine hours of minor course requirements at UNC–Chapel Hill
  • earn a minimum grade of C in at least 12 hours in APR/JRN sub-plans
