Media and Journalism minor
Students majoring outside the school may earn a minor in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Program acceptance is limited to 35 juniors and seniors collectively every application cycle. This prevents registration pressure on required courses for majors. Priority will be given to students who have previously taken two or more MEJO courses within their desired concentration.
Interested students who have a minimum 3.4 GPA must apply between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15 of their sophomore or junior year. Accepted students will be notified by the end of February.
Applicants designate one of two minor concentration offered within the school: Advertising/Public Relations (APR) and Journalism (JRN). Prerequisites must be met for selected minor courses. MEJO minors who enroll in MEJO 153 will take the school’s Usage & Grammar Test as part of the course, but are not required to pass the test with a score of 70 or better as MEJO majors are.
In addition to the program requirements listed below, students must:
• Complete at least 15 credit hours with C grades or better in MEJO courses.
• Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000 in the minor core requirements.
For more information, please consult the degree requirements section of the undergraduate catalog.
Curriculum requirements for students who entered the minor program prior to Fall 2017 are available by speaking with a Hussman academic adviser or by consulting the appropriate undergraduate catalog.
Application for Spring 2022 is closed.
