Hearst Journalism Awards 2011 national champions

The UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication finished first overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards, often called the Pulitzers of college journalism, for the second year in a row. The win was announced during a June 8 ceremony in San Francisco. December 2010 graduate Arkasha Stevenson won the individual national championship in photojournalism, and senior Margaret Cheatham Williams won the individual national championship in multimedia.

Hearst Journalism Awards 2017 national champions

In 2017, the UNC School of Media and Journalism won its third-straight Hearst national championship. And, for the first time ever, the Hearst Foundation awarded the national champions a $25,000 monetary award and announced that award will now go to the national champions each year.

Hearst Journalism Awards national champions

The 2019 win marks eight intercollegiate national championships for the MJ-school and its fourth in only five years — the most of any of the more than 100 accredited programs in the country. Additionally, all five MJ-school finalists placed in the Top 3 for their respective categories: Alex Kormann '19 won first place in the national photojournalism championship; Megan Cain '19 won second place and Brighton McConnell '19 won third place in the national radio broadcast news championship; and Darian Murphy Woehr '19 won first place and Abby Cantrell '20 won third place in the national multimedia championship.

The Office of Student Life and Leadership collaborated with UNC School of Media and Journalism Lecturer Livis Freeman's "MEJO 634: Public Relations Campaigns" course to develop a name-change campaign for StudentLife.unc.edu.

Homefront magazine is dedicated to military families as a means to support and encourage them; to aid those who serve in their transitions coming home; and to share their many heroic stories. We recognize this kind of magazine is a strong need for military families, and our mission is to provide information and answers to them that differ the official line they receive.
