The Different Stories of Charles Scott | Undergraduate Honors Thesis

The newspaper coverage about the desegregation of college sports provides a perspective on race and society at this time in history. This honor’s thesis discusses how The News & Observer, The Daily Tar Heel and Carolina Times covered Charles Scott, the first black scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina, during his college basketball career from 1966 to 1970.

The journalism programs at UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. Central University have partnered with Durham NGOs, schools and civic and church leaders to produced the Durham VOICE, a community newspaper that lifts up the community though journalism that promotes youth development, social change and civic engagement.

The Right Type | Undergraduate Honors Thesis

It has been proven by many studies that gender stereotyping exists in the sports industry, especially in the context of sports advertising. In order to understand these stereotypes in advertising, it is necessary to look into design elements of ads, specifically typography. This study examined 164 ads from Sports Illustrated, a weekly sports magazine, and focused on elements of gender and font.
