Jeff Smith of The Washington Post visits school

Jeff Smith, national investigative correspondent for The Washington Post, is visiting classes in the school for two days as part of the Hearst Visiting Professionals program. His coverage has included political corruption, intelligence matters, national political candidates and counter-terrorism efforts.
Along with two colleagues, Smith won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for coverage of the scandals surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Cairo and students take bronze in international infographics competition

Assistant Professor Alberto Cairo and infographics students in the school won two bronze medals at Malofiej 17, an international infographics competition, in Pamplona, Spain. The awards were for work on the multimedia documentary projects “Atacama Stories” and “Chasing Crusoe.”
“This is the most important infographics competition in the world,” said visual communication Professor Rich Beckman. “And our students are the only students in the world to place in the competition.”

The school will host Chris Hondros, senior staff photographer with Getty Images, on April 17 for the final PhotoNight event of the 2006-2007 school year.
PhotoNight is free and open to the public, and all are welcome. It is an opportunity for students, professionals and enthusiasts to come together and share work. The evening is designed to give photographers the chance to learn from each other and develop their own styles.

Students earn 21 Mark of Excellence Awards 
Carolina students have won 21 regional Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for collegiate journalism during the 2006 calendar year.
More than 3,300 entries in 39 categories were submitted from across SPJ's 12 regions.
