ABC News has selected the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media as home to a new digital bureau to be staffed by students.
ABC News on Campus is a partnership with five top U.S. journalism schools across the country to educate and mentor talented college students. The new bureaus will open in September 2008.

Walter Storholt, a junior electronic communications major from Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., is the first recipient of the Furman Bisher Medal, which honors the legendary sports writer in Atlanta who is a 1938 UNC journalism graduate.

Two national winners, two finalists in Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards
Carolina journalism students Jennifer Carpenter and Walter Storholt were named national winners in the Society of Professional Journalists 2007 Mark of Excellence Awards.

Five students named to UWIRE 100

Five UNC students were named to the UWIRE 100 list of the nation’s top college journalists.
LaToya Evans, Adam Rhew, Joseph Schwartz, Walter Storholt and Julie Turkewitz were selected from more than 500 students nominated from 132 schools. Carolina’s journalism school led all other schools with five students making the list.
The students featured at UWIRE.com will be named in Editor & Publisher magazine and featured on CBS News.

School receives grant to explore online master's degree program
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media received a $50,000 grant from the UNC General Administration for market research into an online master’s program in technology and communication.
Louise Spieler, the school’s associate dean for professional education and strategic initiatives, will work with a faculty committee to develop a blueprint for the proposed program.

School launches yearlong documentary project covering the growing Latino population in North Carolina
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill launched a large-scale media project June 4 that focuses on the implications of a growing Latino population in North Carolina.

Photojournalism students travel to Thailand

Fourteen UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students traveled this summer to Phang Nga, Thailand, to document the effects of the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Phang Nga is a southern province of Thailand on the Andaman Sea – one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami.
Associate professor Pat Davison led the project as part of a second summer session course in the school. The group arrived in Thailand on June 21 and returned to the United States on July 18.
