Former WRAL exec joins faculty

Jim Hefner, former vice president and general manager at CBS affiliate WRAL-TV in Raleigh, has joined the University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media faculty as a professor of the practice of journalism.

Daniel Riffe, former professor at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, was tapped as the first Richard Cole Eminent Professor at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. He joined the school’s faculty July 1.

Nine top UNC journalism students will attend the school’s inaugural “Holding Power Accountable” workshop Aug. 22-24, in Oak Island, N.C. The workshop is intended to provide students with inspiration and coaching on investigative reporting.

Alumna wins business journalism award

Anh Ly, a 2006 UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media graduate, won a 2008 Gerald Loeb Award for excellence in business journalism.
The Loeb Awards, given by the UCLA Anderson School of Management, recognize journalists who make significant contributions to the understanding of business, finance and the economy.

AEJMC Convention 2008
The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media played a significant role in the 2008 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) convention with more than 30 papers accepted from the school’s students and faculty.
AEJMC held its annual convention in Chicago Aug. 6-9. This year’s theme was transformation in the journalism and communication disciplines and industries.
