The state of citizen media
Dan Gillmor will speak on the state of citizen media, Monday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m., in the Freedom Forum Conference Center in Carroll Hall.
Gillmor is director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship and Kauffman Professor of Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University's Cronkite Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Two of the school’s photojournalism students were named finalists in the Picture Story/Series Competition of the 2008-2009 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Lauren Cowart took fourth place and received a $750 award. Ryan Jones placed eight and won a $500 award.

The Triangle Association of Black Journalists (TABJ) will host “The Role of Journalists in Social Media” from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 18. The panel discussion will be held in the Carroll Hall Auditorium.

For students
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media will hold its 2009 Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 10, at 3 p.m. in the Dean E. Smith Center.
Students need to assemble no later than 2:15 p.m. on the concourse outside of entrance C.

Talk on confidentiality, disclosure  
The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is hosting a visit at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 20, from attorney and author Ronald Goldfarb, who has a new book out called "In Confidence: When to Protect Secrecy and When to Require Disclosure."

Creative insider's guide to the global marketplace
Christopher Nurko, the global head of strategy and innovation with Nitro Group Advertising and Innovation in London, will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, in Carroll Hall room 33.
The UNC Ad Club is helping to bring Nurko to Carolina.
Nurko has more than 20 years experience as an American abroad creating, launching, running and building some of the world's most famous brands.

Photojournalism exhibit features images by Carolina students
“The 37th Frame” photojournalism exhibit features more than 50 images by student photographers in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Aspiring high school-aged journalists are encouraged to apply for the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media, a  one-week high school diversity workshop July 19-25 at UNC. The Hussman School of Journalism and Media sponsors this program which honors the legacy of Professor Chuck Stone. For application information, visit jomc.unc.edu/stoneprogram. Priority deadline is June 1.

The N.C. Halls of Fame, based in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, inducted two new members and presented the Next Generation Leadership Award on April 19 in a ceremony at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.

J-school junior Allen Mask and a team of UNC business school MBA students won second place and more than $142,000 April 18 in the 2009 Rice University Business Plan Competition for their medical device company, NextRay, that was spun off from UNC medical school research and technology.
