Five graduate students, two faculty members and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on April 2-4, 2020, at the 16th biennial Kentucky Conference of Health Communication, held in a virtual format.

Six graduate students, one faculty member and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on March 19-21, 2020, at the 45th annual Southeast Colloquium of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, held in a virtual format. These scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers and presentations. 

Experts at UNC Hussman, which continues to be at the forefront of health communications research and education, have received a major new $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study warnings about hookah smoking.

Daniel Riffe was born in the coal fields of West Virginia, and although his family no longer worked in the mines — his father refused after watching his own father die of black lung disease — Riffe never forgot the working-class communities that forged him.He never forgot their struggles.

Data wrangler and team leader Scott Klein, who directs a group of journalists and programmers as the deputy managing editor of ProPublica, visited UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the invitation of faculty member Ryan Thornburg, who teaches data-driven journalism. Klein describes his work as planting a stake at the intersection of journalism, data, software and design.

UNC Hussman alumnus Taylor Bennett ’03 is the global head of public affairs for Lime, the scooter-sharing company. He graduated in 2003 and built his career at Edelman. Eventually, he moved to the tech startup world, where he served as communications lead at Uber (2014–2016) and head of public affairs at Pandora (2016–2018) before joining Lime. We spoke with Bennett recently. 

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Dean Susan King has been honored as the 2019 Scripps Howard Administrator of the Year.

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media doctoral alumna Johanna Cleary ’04 (Ph.D.) honors her father’s legacy by supporting a national media law student paper competition administered by the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy — a collaboration of UNC Hussman and the UNC School of Law.
